“You really don’t have to do this,” Ava said, coming into my room as I packed my things. “I don’t want you to go.”

“I know you guys need your space, Av,” I said. “I’ve been in your hair long enough. It’s just a couple of days.”

Ava sighed and sank onto my bed. She lay back against the pillows and put her hand on her lower stomach.

“How are you feeling?”

“You would think I’m eight months in with how tired I am. My back is killing me, and I can’t keep anything down. I was so excited when I found out I was pregnant again. Now, I just want it over.”

“It gets better after a while, doesn’t it?”

Ava narrowed her eyes at me. “It’s supposed to, although you seem perfectly fine.”

“I’m not as far along as you are,” I pointed out.

“Yeah, and you’re handling it like a pro.”

“Maybe physically…”

“You’re not okay emotionally?”

I shrugged and folded a top, putting it into my bag. “I don’t know how I feel yet. I keep thinking I have to figure it out, but I just never get there.”

“It’s a big thing to have a baby, especially in your situation,” Ava said. “Don’t be too hard on yourself. I know how tough it can be.”

Ava had gotten pregnant accidentally too, when she and Noah had faked a marriage to fool his dad. It had been a messy story, and it was ridiculous how similar our situations were now.

“At least you were already married,” I said with a grin.

Ava rolled her eyes. “What’s with us and making terrible choices?”

“Best friends—we do it all together.”

Ava laughed.

“So, how is this going to work?” she asked.

“What?”

“Your living with him.”

“I’m moving into a spare room, and I’ll be there for a couple of days before I come back. I think it’s all going to be over soon. His PR manager is super happy with how things are going, so we don’t have to keep doing this forever.”

Ava hesitated. “Do you want to do this forever?”

I shook my head. “It won’t work.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

I sighed. “I know it won’t work, so whether I want it or not is irrelevant.”

“What makes you think it won’t work?”

I looked at Ava. “I’m pregnant.”

“Yeah? It’s his baby. I mean, sometime you’re going to have to face this and actually figure it out with him. I can’t believe you haven’t told him yet.”

I folded a pair of jeans and packed them.

“It’s not that simple.” When Ava stayed silent, inviting me to fill the silence, I did. “He doesn’t want kids.”

“What?” Ava asked, shocked. “How do you know?”

“He told me,” I said with a nonchalant shrug. Inside, I was reeling. When I’d heard that Gavin didn’t want kids, I’d died on the inside.

“When did you even talk about this? Without you telling him you’re having a baby, that doesn’t make any sense.”

“Actually…” I glanced at Ava, suddenly remembering how we’d gotten on the topic, and a pang of guilt shot into my chest. “I might have told him that you’re pregnant.
